WipEout HD Fury Review

Posted Image

Platform: PS3
Release Date: 25 September 2008
Genre: Racing
Modes: Single-player, Multiplayer, Online Multiplayer

Summary

WipEout HD is a futuristic racing game available on the PSN and on Blu-ray. It contains tracks from both WipEout Pulse and WipEout Pure, both released on the PSP. It races in 1080p and at 60 frames per second and is a joy to play.

Gameplay: 9/10

This is one of the most in depth racers you will find. There is everything you will need to find here, from weapons to different styles of vehicles, it's all here. While there is a little learning curve to begin with, after a short time (from playing with noobs, around 30 minutes) the controls begin to feel natural and the game becomes even more fun than when you first started it. The controls are fairly easy to get used to, and once you have found out what each of the weapons does, along with the little additions like barrel roll and sideshift, you will realise that you are addicted!

While a small learning curve is needed, the mastering of the controls is hard. The actual game itself starts off with the slowest speed setting. While this may seem fast at first, later on you will realise how slow it actually is. However, the progression is good (if you play in the single campaign first instead of diving right into the online multiplayer), and you can always change the difficulty to novice. There are 3 difficulty settings, and each play well. The AI is intelligent and responds well the majority of the time; I found occasionally that I was barged out of the way as if I wasn't even there, but that is only a minor quibble.

In order to get some of the higher trophies you will need to step up the difficulty level, which can initially be challenging and frustrating, but as you soon get to grips with the level then you will reap the rewards. I put in countless hours simply because of the fun I had on this game.

The different modes are going to keep you coming back for a long time, and especially if you get the Fury expansion pack. There is straight up racing, time trial and speed lap, and then there is a mode called Zone. This is where the player starts off at the slowest speed, then slowly gets faster and faster. It's highly addictive, so prepare to have some spare time when starting it! Fury adds a couple of extra modes, and an entirely new campaign mode, so if you are wondering what to buy, I would suggest the full pack as it is well worth the money.

Presentation: 10/10

The stages themselves are beautifully laid out. The menu system is easy to use, and everything is clear. When choosing your ship to race, the ship skins and the different types of ships are clearly marked and it looks fantastic. Load screens are short and when the race starts, the entire atmosphere is great. From crowd noises to ship noises, this game is great to get immersed into. The music fits in spectacularly well, and if you get bored of it (which you may or may not depending on how long you play the game) there is always the option to put your own music into the game which is easily done. This is quite a cool feature as well, as on Zone mode the track responds to the music, and the music responds to what is going on on screen. It is all really well thought out and put together.

In the race everything is laid out very well. The HUD is simple and effective, and if you are unsure of what all the weapons do or mean when they pop up, then there is an easy to use guide available. The electronic voice that warns you of incoming missiles and whatnot is great, and the collision system is fantastic. There is no visual ship damage, but this doesn't affect the game at all, as there is a little gauge at the top which shows you how much ship energy there is left. Studio Liverpool have really thought about pretty much everything in this game.

Graphics: 10/10

Simply put, this is probably the best looking game I have ever played. The 1080p graphics are a joy to behold if you have the right equipment, and even if you don't (as I have experienced both sides of HD and non-HD) then the graphics still jump out. The attention to detail on every level is astounding. For example, there will be large transport ships just flying around in the background, but the level of attention on them is amazing. It all fits together really smoothly, and what's really cool is photo mode. You can pause the game and take a photo of anything. Anything. And then play with the saturation and the blur and contrast... it's amazing how they squeeze this all onto a PSN game and then only ask you to pay a small amount for it.

Does that image above look like actual gameplay? No? Well you'll be wrong. Because it is that visually stunning. Even on the highest difficulty and the fastest speed it still looks that beautiful, especially on the Zone Mode.

Lasting Appeal: 10/10

As I mentioned earlier, I spent hours and hours on this game, and at one point I stopped playing it for a bit as I had mountains of other games to get my teeth stuck into. However, I came back because it really is that enjoyable. If you are trying to complete the game 100% then you will spend a LONG time on this game. Even after you finish the game with a platinum trophy and do everything from the both single campaigns (Fury and HD), then there is online to jump into. And it is just as fun, if not more fun, than the single player. The ranking system is addictive, the badges are fun, and the overall feel is perfect. It truly is a quality game that will keep you coming back for more.

Score: 39/40

A beauty to look at, immensely fun to play, and lots to keep you going. This is a game that I will play long after the next console comes out. Get this if you are even vaguely interested in racing as you will enjoy it. Not a perfect 40/40 as there are the odd things not quite spot on, like online that occasionally lagged for me, but my internet connection is one of the worst around so my problems will probably not be mirrored in your gameplay. Other than that, GET THIS GAME!!!

Haha, thanks very much. I'm not trying to sell it, but it is one of the best games I have ever played and it is rather cheap. It's also surprisingly underrated, I would expect more buzz about it really, but hey ho.
